Yet another blow for Barcelona’s January plans as Ronald Koeman payoff agreement revealed

Yet another blow for Barcelona’s January plans as Ronald Koeman payoff agreement revealed

An insight into the kind of payoff expected to be forked over by La Liga giants FC Barcelona to ex-manager Ronald Koeman has been forthcoming on Friday afternoon.

Koeman departs

The news which those of a Blaugrana persuasion had so long been awaiting of course finally arrived late last month.

On the back of an underwhelming opening to the campaign, which saw the club faltering in both domestic and European competition, the Barcelona board came to the understandable decision to part ways with the aforementioned Koeman.

An official statement released across the club’s social media platforms confirmed that:

FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first team coach. The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva.

FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the Club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.

Joan Laporta and co., of course, have since gone on to bring in club icon Xavi Hernandez as Koeman’s replacement, with the Spaniard having gotten off to a solid if unspectacular start in the Camp Nou dugout.

10 million euro payoff?

As alluded to above, however, whilst Barca may be rid of Koeman when it comes to the Dutchman’s presence itself, they are yet to leave the Dutchman in the past when it comes to his financial burden on the club.

This comes with the one-time Blaugrana midfielder owed a severance pay package, owing to his premature exit.

And, if the latest word stemming from the Spanish media is anything to go by, then such a payout looks set to hit the club’s finances, and in turn budget for the January transfer window, hard.

As per a report from Diario Sport, those in a position of power at the Camp Nou this week reached an agreement with Koeman’s lawyers, to hand over the full 10 million euro remaining on his Barcelona contract, before December 31st.

Not only that, but Alfred Schreuder and Kenrik Larsson, the Dutchman’s technical staff, will too be paid in full.
