Xavi’s Barcelona January budget revealed as he seeks squad overhaul

Xavi takes the Barcelona hotseat

Following the departure of Ronald Koeman, former legendary midfielder Xavi Hernandez has been announced as the new Barcelona boss, following an agreement having been reached with Qatar side Al-Sadd to release him from his services.

It represents the culmination of two years of speculation as to when the Spaniard would rejoin the Blaugrana, and he arrives with his beloved club in lowly 9th place in La Liga, having won just four of their opening 12 games, and already 11 points off of the title pace.

The former legendary player has already made sweeping changes in Catalonia, and will surely look to make more come the January transfer window.

Shoestring budget could cause problems

However, he may be hampered severely in that regard, if the latest reports are to be believed. As per ESPN, the club have around 10 million euros to spend on the squad this January. This lines up with a previous figure suggesting that the club had 16 million euros, but had not taken into account the severance payment to the now jobless Ronald Koeman.

Due to this small budget, other methods of changing the squad may have to be explored. There has already been discussion about the possibility of recalling Francisco Trincao from his loan move at Wolves in January, as he would fit the criteria of winger that the new coach is looking for.

101 has already covered the areas in which Xavi is looking to strengthen, which include in the wide berths, as well as at striker, where Luuk de Jong is set to be sent back to Sevilla.

Beyond Trincao, however, the money may become an issue. It will force Barcelona to lean on other club’s desperation to offload players, which could see them strike loan to buy deals for the likes of Raheem Sterling, who is out of favour at Manchester City.

Will Xavi still be able to make good progress?
