Why West Ham did not make late push for Man United’s Jesse Lingard in summer window

Lingard impresses with West Ham

Jesse Lingard enjoyed something of a career revival in the second half of 2020/21.

The 28-year-old majorly struggled for any sort of regular action with Manchester United over the first half of the 2020/21 campaign.

He notched just three appearances for the Red Devils, all of which came in cup competitions.

As a result, it didn’t come as too much of a surprise when United allowed Lingard to depart Old Trafford on loan during the winter window.

What did prove surprising, though, was just how impressive the midfielder looked with West Ham.

In 16 league outings for David Moyes’ outfit, Lingard notched nine goals and five assists, playing a key role in the Hammers securing a Europa League berth for the 2021/22 season.

Why West Ham didn’t push for Lingard

On the back of such an impressive loan stint, West Ham’s fans were no doubt hoping to see Lingard return next term on a permanent deal.

Especially once Cristiano Ronaldo had returned to Man United, leaving Lingard competing with Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Paul Pogba and the aforementioned Ronaldo for a spot in United’s front-four spots.

Despite all of this competition and his previous struggles at United, Lingard would remain at Old Trafford over the summer whilst West Ham strengthened their attacking midfield ranks with Nikola Vlasic.

And now, an explanation for why West Ham did not make a late push for Lingard has been provided by 90min, who report that:

West Ham United did not make a late push for Jesse Lingard in the transfer window after the player made it clear to the club that he did not want to return to the London Stadium

Lingard is said to have communicated this decision to joint-chairman David Sullivan personally.
