Why the latest injury update at Liverpool spells bad news for West Ham

Confirmation of Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips’ impending stint on the sidelines spells bad news for Premier League rivals West Ham United, it has been confirmed.

Ogbonna blow

The need for defensive reinforcements has of course emerged as something of a pressing matter at the London Stadium of late.

This comes with David Moyes’ high-flying Hammers having been dealt an altogether untimely blow on the personnel front.

Early last month, in a Premier League meeting with, coincidentally, Liverpool, Angelo Ogbonna was forced out of proceedings inside 25 minutes, clutching his knee.

Subsequent medical tests, in turn, confirmed the worst, as word was forthcoming that the Italian had suffered an injury to his Anterior Cruciate Ligament, likely ruling him out for the remainder of the campaign.

Reds star eyed

It therefore came as little surprise to hear that, ahead of the opening of the January window, the transfer team at West Ham had begun identifying potential additions to the club’s backline.

Ogbonna, after all, had started all 11 of the club’s Premier League outings prior to his injury issue.

One such player named as a key target on the part of David Moyes and co., meanwhile, was the aforementioned Nat Phillips.

In fact, some outlets went as far as to suggest that West Ham had begun ‘laying the groundwork’ for a winter deal, with Liverpool not expected to stand in the way of their out-of-favour stopper.

As alluded to above, though, on Friday, such efforts towards striking an agreement have been dealt an altogether considerable blow.

This comes after Phillips was ruled out for at least a month, after suffering a fractured cheekbone during Liverpool’s 2-1 downing of AC Milan in the Champions League in midweek.

As per the Evening Standard, news of the defender’s issue means that a January West Ham swoop now appears highly unlikely.
