Manchester City top of the pile

It was a good weekend for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side.

A routine 4-0 win over Newcastle United was strengthened as both Liverpool and Chelsea dropped points on the same day, taking their lead at the top to 3 points over Jurgen Klopp’s side, and six clear of Chelsea.

A masterclass from Joao Cancelo, which included a goal and an assist, overcame a stubborn Newcastle side at a raucous St James’ Park, and consigned the home side to a Christmas spent in the relegation zone.

However, there were two notable omissions from the starting side.

Why Foden and Grealish didn’t start

Changes are to be expected in Manchester City’s starting lineups, given the strength in depth that the Citizens have.

However, with Foden and Grealish both dropped from the starting XI after the 7-0 win against Leeds United, Guardiola was quick to point out that it was not merely rotation.

The Spanish boss said:

“Not rotation, no.”

“I decided for this team because they deserved to play today, these guys and not the other ones.

“At Christmas time I pay a lot of attention to behaviour on and off the pitch. And when off the pitch is not proper they are not going to play.

“So we have to be focused all the time because of distractions at Christmas time and everything that happens – you have to still be focused.”

Will this disciplining be the end of it, or will they remain out for the Weekend’s clash?
