Why Man United’s Scott McTominay is set to play no part in Scotland’s clash with Moldova

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay will not be involved when Scotland face off against Moldova on Friday, it has been confirmed.

Playoff spot up for grabs

The Tartan Army are set to get their World Cup qualifying campaign back underway in 24 hours’ time.

On the back of a quartet of successive wins over the last couple of months, Steve Clarke’s men will make the trip to the Zimbru Stadium, for a crucial showdown with the aforementioned Moldova.

A victory would see the visitors assured of a playoff spot in Group F, behind runaway leaders Denmark.

Lyndon Dykes proved the hero the last time Scotland faced off with Moldova, securing all three points at Hampden Park back in September owing to a close-range finish.

‘Rest and recuperate’

As outlined above, though, if Clarke and co. intend to make it five wins on the bounce, then they will need to do so without the services of a key performer in the middle of the park.

The player in question? Scott McTominay.

Speaking in a press conference on Thursday, Scotland’s boss was asked for an update on the wellbeing of his squad.

And Clarke went on to confirm that he is set to have ‘almost’ a full panel of players to choose from, except for Manchester United star McTominay.

This comes with the 24-year-old having picked up a throat virus over the last couple of days.

‘Almost everyone is good.’

‘Unfortunately, Scott McTominay has picked up a bit of a throat virus so we have sent Scott home to rest and recuperate and hopefully join us again at the weekend.’
