Why Jannik Vestergaard is set to miss Leicester’s meeting with West Ham

Leicester City defender Jannik Vestergaard will be forced to sit out the club’s meeting with West Ham United this evening, it has been confirmed.

Capital clash

The final fixture of the Premier League gameweek is set to play out later today.

The clash in question will see West Ham welcome Leicester to the London Stadium, for a highly anticipated showdown.

The two sides were of course separated by just a solitary point, and place in the English top-flight last season, ultimately culminating in the Foxes and Hammers clinching respective Europa League berths.

Both clubs, meanwhile, also got their 2021/22 campaigns off to a positive start last time out, courtesy of downings of Wolves (Leicester) and Newcastle (West Ham).

A hard-fought 90 minutes, in turn, is widely predicted in the English capital on Monday evening.

Foxes’ woes mount

As outlined above, though, with just hours to go before the action gets underway at the London Stadium, visitors Leicester have revealed an altogether concerning blow.

This comes in the form of confirmation that Jannik Vestergaard is set to sit versus West Ham.

Towering defender Vestergaard, brought to the King Power earlier this month on the back of the long-term injury picked up by Wesley Fofana, was expected to be handed his Foxes bow on Monday.

However, as revealed by the reliable David Ornstein of The Athletic, the Dane picked up a fitness problem in training over the weekend, and will therefore be unavailable for selection.

Vestergaard joins the aforementioned Fofana and Jonny Evans on the sidelines, amid something of a crisis at the heart of Leicester’s backline.
