Why Ed Woodward may be ‘reluctant’ to get rid of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United

Man United hammered by Liverpool

Manchester United would be smashed 5-0 by Liverpool last Sunday, in what was one of the club’s most embarrassing defeats in their storied history.

The game was over at the break after Liverpool netted four to leave United on the receiving end of an unwanted record.

During the clash, fans of the Red Devils called for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be sacked.

This was not at all surprising given the fact that Man United were already eight points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea after just nine games, out of the League Cup, lost to Young Boys in the Champions League and struggled to beat a weakened Atalanta side two weeks ago.

Woodward reluctant to sack Solskjaer?

So, given all of this, why did Man United not just sack Ole after the Liverpool loss?

Of course, some managers should be given time to prove themselves. But the Norwegian has been in the job for nearly three years now and has done basically nothing to show he is good enough to take Man United to a Premier League, Champions League or even an FA Cup.

Now though, a potential reason for why Solskjaer has been able to stay in his job has come to light.

It was reported earlier this year that Ed Woodward will step down as executive vice-chairman at the end of 2021.

And, as reported by the Daily Mail, Woodward is perhaps reluctant to sack Solskjaer before he leaves at the end of this year as it would provide a damming final comment on his time at United:

While many outsiders were left scratching their heads at the failure to fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after last week’s 5-0 trouncing by Liverpool, some insiders believe Woodward will be reluctant to get rid of the Norwegian before he leaves as it would provide a damning final comment on his time in charge.

If this indeed proves to be the case, then Man United fans may have to endure Solskjaer for at least another two months.
