Why Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour could be set to end his Norwich loan early

Why Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour could be set to end his Norwich loan early

Chelsea batter sorry Norwich

In a game that was more reminiscent of a cup tie than a league match, Chelsea handed Norwich a 7-0 battering at Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime.

A well-taken hattrick from starboy Mason Mount was added to by goals from Callum Hudson Odoi (2), Ben Chilwell and Reece James, with the result never really in doubt.

The massive defeat sees the Canaries sitting bottom of the Premier League after nine games, yet to pick up a win, and with a goal difference of -21. It is not looking good for their survival chances, but at the other end of the table, the win keeps Chelsea at the top of the pile.

Whether the Blues can go all the way this year remains to be seen, but they are certainly a force to be reckoned with on recent showing, evening without the firepower of Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku, both of whom were missing for yesterdays tie.

Gilmour could be set to return

One player who has perhaps flown under the radar outside of East Anglia, however, is Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour. Sent on loan to Norwich from the Blues, the Scot has managed just 4 appearances for the struggling outfit, and has not played in the Premier League in over a month.

This, from Chelsea’s perspective, is obviously not why Gilmour was loaned out, with his fledgling career threatening to stagnate at Carrow Road should this remain the status quo.

With Gilmour not getting the minutes that he desperately needs, or that Chelsea wanted him to, even with a relegation-threatened side, there is surely a strong chance that he could be recalled this January, as the Blues look to develop one of their most talented assets.
