Why Bruno Fernandes has put Manchester United contract negotiations on hold

Why Bruno Fernandes has put Manchester United contract negotiations on hold

Bruno Fernandes’ Manchester United stint

The signing of Bruno Fernandes looked to be one of the best bits of business Manchester United had done in years.

The Portuguese arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting CP in January of 2020, and would go on to completely dominate the English top-flight for 18 months.

Fernandes, of course, played a key role in United securing a Champions League spot in 2019/20.

The midfield maestro was then once again in top form last season. In total, Fernandes netted 28 and assisted 17 in 58 outings across all competitions – a feat which saw him named as Man United’s Player of the Year.

His sensational form has waned slightly in the current campaign, but Manchester United as a squad are seriously struggling.

Still, Fernandes has been able to net seven and assist nine in 26 outings for the Red Devils in 2021/22, which is still a pretty respectable record for someone not playing close to their best right now.

Bruno Fernandes puts Manchester United contract talk on hold

So, given how key Fernandes has been to Manchester United since he arrived, it was not at all surprising to see it reported back in September of 2021 that the Portuguese was closing in on a new Manchester United contract worth somewhere in the region of £250,000-a-week.

However, we are now a good chunk of the way through January and Fernandes has still not penned fresh terms.

An explanation for this, though, has since been provided by the Daily Mail, citing The Athletic, on Monday.

They report that Bruno Fernandes has put negotiations over a lucrative new contract at Manchester United on hold as he waits to see the direction the team is heading in.
