Why Barcelona are unlikely to sanction a return for Dani Alves

An insight into the chances of Barcelona opting to bring Dani Alves back to the club over the coming weeks has been forthcoming on Saturday.

‘Just have to call…’

The name of right-back Alves has of course been back in the headlines in Catalunya over the last 24 hours.

This comes after widespread reports that the Brazilian icon was set to make himself available to the Blaugrana were followed by Alves this morning confirming as much.

Speaking in an interview with Spanish outlet Sport (as cited by AS), the 38-year-old explained:

‘I left saying that when Barça needed me and wanted me, I would be at their disposal regardless of where I was. The affection, love and respect that I have for this club is too much. If Barça think they need me, they just have to call. I still think that I can contribute anywhere, but more at Barça because of the number of youngsters they have now.’

‘In every place I have been, I have always thought that the perfect mix is experience with youth. There will come a time when youth will mature and the older ones will leave. It is a natural cycle, but in football mistakes have been made and this process has accelerated. Processes cannot be sped up. The mix is essential.’

Alves could technically be picked up by his ex-club at any moment, owing to his free agent status.

The 119-time capped international last lined out for Sao Paulo in his home country of Brazil, but opted to terminate his contract last month on the back of a wage dispute.

Barca unmoved

And, as outlined above, on Saturday evening, an insight into the chances of the board at the Camp Nou actually opting to sanction a return for their one-time defensive standout has been provided.

The news, however, will be viewed as a blow on the part of the Barca faithful who remained hopeful of what would have proven a historic reunion.

As per mounting reports across the Spanish media, Joan Laporta and co., as things stand, remain altogether uninterested in the prospect of an Alves return.

This comes with those in a position of power in Catalunya concerned that such a move would see the development of the likes of Sergino Dest and Oscar Mingueza halted by fresh competition for places:
