Gunners showdown

The marquee clash of the latest round of Premier League fixtures is of course set to play out shortly.

The matchup in question will see Manchester United play host to Arsenal, in Michael Carrick’s final outing as caretaker Red Devils boss.

Ahead of the imminent arrival of Ralf Rangnick on the bench at Old Trafford, United will aim to build on a timely upturn in form over the last couple of weeks, which saw them follow up a Champions League win over Villarreal with a credible point at table-topping Chelsea at the weekend.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, though, will prove no pushovers, with the Gunners having fallen to just a solitary defeat since August, and buoyed by a comfortable downing of Newcastle last time out.

In turn, Carrick no doubt led his side back to Old Trafford this evening hopeful of having as many of his key performers as possible fit and available for selection.

Upon the Reds’ matchday squad being unveiled, however, it quickly became clear that two such players were set to play no part.

The stars in question? Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Left-back Shaw was of course viewed as a doubt in the build-up to the clash, after being forced onto the sidelines owing to a concussion.

Opposite number Wan-Bissaka’s absence, however, came as considerably more surprising.

But, as outlined above, ahead of kick-off at Old Trafford, an explanation for the stopper, who has endured a less than impressive campaign to date, missing out versus Arsenal has been provided.

Speaking to the media pre-match, Michael Carrick explained:

‘Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] – Hudson-Odoi stood on his hand so he’s in a fair bit of pain. It’s touch and go so he didn’t make it for today.’
