Western Railway launches Yatra mobile app to provide live train status

The Western Railway (WR) on Wednesday launched a mobile app that will allow commuters to check live on the status of trains on its commuter network split between Churchgate station in south Mumbai and Dahanu in nearby Palghar district.

According to the zonal railway, the app, Yatra, also has several other features.

Western Railway chief executive Ashok Kumar Misra launched the app in the concourse of Churchgate station in the presence of railway officials and other dignitaries, said Sumit Thakur, WR’s public relations manager, in a press release.

The Western Railway has installed GPS tracking devices on all of its commuter trains, which will allow the app to provide their location in real time.

Thakur said that with the app, developed in conjunction with a private company, commuters will not only be able to get a train’s live location on the map, but will also be able to see it moving.

“In just three simple steps, commuters can see the live location. Commuters can find the nearest stations directly on the map, tap the source station, and follow the train of their choice so they can gauge at which distance they are from the train to plan their trip,” he said.

Thakur said commuters will get authentic information regarding live train updates, announcements, latest timetables, maps of major train stations and their amenities.

The software also provides information about Mumbai Metro services and buses, and it has a section where users can give feedback.

Passengers will also have easy access to important railway and medical emergency phone numbers and travelers can use the app to explore nearby tourist destinations and places to visit near train stations.

Western Railway said the app is also compatible with divyangjan.

Divyang commuters (persons with disabilities) who use mobile phones via voice commands can easily find their train’s live location with the help of Google Assistant, Thakur said.

Last July, Central Railway launched live tracking of its commuter trains via the app.
