The latest contenders in the foldable phone market are here from vivo with the X Fold2 and X Flip. Vivo’s second-generation horizontal foldable phone brings improvements across the board with a reworked hinge mechanism, the latest-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, new cameras, and 120W wired charging.

X Flip is vivo’s first attempt at a foldable flip and it packs a large 3-inch cover display, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset and 50MP main camera. Unfortunately, vivo has not shared any details regarding a global release.

X Fold2 brings an 8.03-inch E6 AMOLED display with a resolution of 2160×1916 pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz. The panel brings an aspect ratio of 4:3.55 and a new hinge system of drop style that is lighter and more durable than that used on last year’s X Fold and X Fold+.

You also get a 6.53-inch AMOLED cover display with a 2520×1080 pixel resolution and 120Hz refresh rate and a more traditional 21:9 aspect ratio. Both panels are equipped with ultrasonic fingerprint scanners and 16 MP front cameras housed in punch-hole cutouts. In terms of dimensions, the X Fold2 is 1.5mm thinner than its predecessor in folded form and over 30 grams lighter.

X Fold2 packs a triple camera on the back with a 50MP IMX866V main unit with OIS and Zeiss T* coating on the lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens and a 12MP 2x portrait lens that also offers up to 20x digital zoom. The camera system is supported by vivo’s self-developed V2 image chip which boasts improved HDR in stills and video and better noise reduction. X Fold2 can record up to 8K video at 30 fps and has a Zeiss Cinematic mode.

The Android 13 foldable boots with OriginOS 3 on top, which has several improvements for the big screen. These include a taskbar for easy multitasking, a PC remote control feature, and an adaptable user interface in certain apps when you tilt the hinge. Operation is provided by a 4,800 mAh battery with 120 W wired charging and 50 W wireless charging.

vivo X Fold2 is available in two versions – a 12/256 GB version priced at CNY 8,999 ($1,308) and a 12/512 GB version for CNY 9,999 ($1,453).

The X Flip is vivo’s first foldable clamshell phone and it brings a roomy 3-inch AMOLED Cover display that can be used for just about everything from texting to browsing maps and browsing. use of social media applications. vivo is actively working with app developers to optimize their apps for cover display so that users can perform most tasks without opening the internal screen.

The primary display is a 6.74-inch AMOLED LTPO with FHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. It also features a teardrop-shaped hinge mechanism that should address the infamous crease seen on the most folding screens. X Flip brings a 32MP front camera and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

There’s a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset at the helm aided by 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. The camera department features the same Sony IMX866V 50MP sensor with OIS found on the X Fold2 alongside a 12MP ultrawide module.

You can lay the phone flat on a table and adjust the hinge to your desired position for hands-free selfies. You can also use the 50MP main camera for even better detail. There’s a 4,400mAh battery with 44W fast charging here and Origin OS3 based on Android 13 on the software side.

vivo X Flip starts at CNY 5,999 ($872) for the 12/256 GB version and goes up to CNY 6,699 ($973) for the 12/512 GB model.
