Vitesse fans take aim at Tottenham after Conference League cancellation

Vitesse fans make feelings known

SBV Vitesse fans made their feelings towards Tottenham and football governing body UEFA known tonight before their home clash with Slovenian side NK Mura at the GelreDome.

Supporters left explicit banners posted on divider rails outside of the ground in response to UEFA taking the decision to postpone the clash between Tottenham and group-leading Stade Rennais at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The issue, however, was UEFA’s unwillingness to afford the same ruling to the Vitesse-NK Mura clash. The club did lodge a formal complaint with the governing body, citing that the postponing of one while the other group stage fixture goes ahead – with Tottenham and Vitesse in a battle for the runner-up spot – offers a potentially unfair advantage for Spurs;

“Vitesse has not (yet) received an official message from UEFA about the consequences of the cancellation in London for Vitesse vs NS Mura. Vitesse has not (yet) received an official message from UEFA about the consequences of the cancellation in London for Vitesse vs NS Mura.”

Should Vitesse win, it could set up a potential scenario where Rennes – who are already guaranteed top-spot – could take their foot off the gas, giving Spurs an increased chance of matching the result Vites may manage tonight.

Tottenham hitting the ground running under Antonio Conte

The appointment of Antonio Conte has come off without a hitch at Tottenham since the former Italian international took the reigns over from Nuno Espírito Santo.

Spurs have posted a 4-1-1 record under Conte, and have yet to taste defeat in the Premier League, and that form has resulted in them bouncing back up the table and into 5th just two points back of West Ham with a vital match in hand.

Things have been slightly rockier in Europe with the club suffering a shock 2-1 loss against NK Mura, putting them in a position now where they need three points against Rennes, but they did beat Vitesse 3-2 at home in what was Conte’s first match in charge in a vital win.

With Tottenham set to clash with a Brighton outfit that has not won since matchday five in the Premier League while posting a 0-8-2 record, Spurs should be able to continue their rejuvenation period under the Italian headmaster.
