Tammy to join Roma

As confirmed by various sources last night, Tammy Abraham is set to leave Chelsea to join Roma on a permanent deal worth 40 million euros.

Abraham came onto the pitch as a substitute in Chelsea’s opening day victory over Crystal Palace, but left Stamford Bridge with a suitcase packed after the game, prompting speculation about his imminent departure.

And the speculation proved to be well-founded, with the reports of Roma’s agreement coming to the fore later in the evening.

As per The Athletic, Arsenal were Abraham’s preferred destination, and while the Gunners harboured an interest in then-Chelsea forward, no bid was forthcoming.

This afternoon, Abraham touched down in Rome, to a raucous welcome. The Roma fanbase, who have just seen their main forward Edin Dzeko depart for Inter Milan on a free transfer, will surely be excited to see the 23 year-old in a burgundy shirt this season.

Meanwhile, Abraham will link up with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who will have crossed paths when Abraham was part of the Chelsea academy.

It remains to be seen just how much of a success Abraham will prove in the Italian capital, but with Chelsea’s reported buy-back clause of 80 million euros active from 2023, they clearly feel that he could become world-class.
