Premier League giants Arsenal have, on Sunday, been backed by pundit Micah Richards, amid the widespread controversy surrounding the postponement of the club’s scheduled meeting with Tottenham.

NLD fiasco

The headline news across the English football landscape on Saturday of course came in the form of the announcement that this weekend’s North London Derby would not be going ahead.

After Arsenal, on Friday, lodged an official request to have the fixture pushed back, the Premier League agreed to as much just 24 hours prior to the planned kick-off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Following a request from Arsenal FC, the Premier League Board met today and regrettably agreed to postpone the club’s away fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, due to be played at 4:30pm on Sunday 16 January,’ an official statement confirmed.

It was subsequently revealed that the Premier League’s decision had come as a result of the Gunners ‘having fewer than the required number of players available for the match.’

This comes with Mikel Arteta currently unable to call on the likes of Thomas Partey, Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Granit Xhaka, owing to a combination of all of injury, Covid-19, AFCON commitments and suspension.

‘Not an Arsenal thing’

Despite the decision on the clash, in the end, having of course been made by the Premier League themselves, though, yesterday’s announcement has since actually seen Arsenal singled out for widespread criticism.

Rival fans, the media and pundits alike have all directed their anger, somewhat bizarrely, at the red half of north London, amid the widespread agreement that today’s derby should likely have gone ahead.

As alluded to above, though, one member of the pundit team at Sky Sports, on Sunday, was in fact keen to jump to the defence of Arteta and co.

Speaking ahead of the day’s lunchtime Premier League double header, former Manchester City defender Micah Richards revealed his opinion that Arsenal have ‘done nothing wrong’, amid the insinuation that the Gunners have been unfairly targeted over the course of the last 24 hours:
