Lionel Messi proved the instigator in chief this afternoon, as Paris Saint-Germain recovered from a goal down to eventually put Saint-Etienne to the sword.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men returned to action a short time ago.

In their latest Ligue 1 outing, the capital giants made the trip to Saint-Etienne, hopeful of extending their advantage atop the French top-flight to a hefty 14 points.

And, when all was said and done, this is precisely what they managed.

It was in fact the hosts who opened the scoring on the day, when Denis Bouanga slotted home on the rebound after Timothée Kolodziejczak’s initial effort was well kept out.

PSG, however, soon came roaring back.

First, on the stroke of the interval, the aforementioned Messi’s whipped delivery into the area was nodded home in superb fashion by Marquinhos:

Then, ten minutes from time, the turnaround was complete, as a magical Messi helper this time set compatriot Angel Di Maria free to pick out the far corner with ease:

And there was still time for PSG’s oft-criticised summer arrival to add further gloss to a wonderful afternoon’s work, teeing up Marquinhos’ brace to make sure of all three points deep into injury-time:

Remarkably, this marked the fifth occasion on which Messi has bagged a trio of assists in a single outing over the course of his career to date.

Neymar blow

An otherwise positive 90 minutes for PSG on Sunday, however, was soured considerably late in the action at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.

This came when a challenge from behind left Neymar grounded and in evident pain, eventually culminating in the Brazilian being stretchered from the field of play.

Subsequent replays showcased the severity of the potential injury at hand, as Neymar’s left ankle turned to a full 90-degree angle in the turf.
