A pulsating opening to the Africa Cup of Nations finale showdown between Senegal and Egypt almost inevitably saw Liverpool duo Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah take centre stage.

The first major talking point of the showpiece occasion came inside five minutes, when favourites Senegal were awarded a penalty, after Saliou Ciss was needlessly felled by Mohamed Abdelmonem:

Sadio Mane, in turn, stepped up to take responsibility of the ensuing spot-kick.

Senegal’s star man, however, saw his drilled effort straight down the middle well saved by Mohamed Abou Gabal (better known as Gabaski), fast establishing himself as something of a hero amongst the Egyptian fanbase:

Abou Gabal, however, may well have been aided in his latest heroics from 12 yards by none other than Mane’s Liverpool teammate and attacking partner in crime, Mohamed Salah.

This comes with Egypt’s captain having been spotted providing a piece of advice to the nation’s shot-stopper, presumably based on where Mane was likely to place his spot-kick.

The latter did attempt to intervene courtesy of some mind-games of his own, but, evidently, it was Salah who came out on top in round one of the Liverpool attacker face off in Yaounde:

‘Don’t know how closely’

Whilst the eyes of Liverpool supporters across the globe are no doubt glued to proceedings at The Olembe Stadium at present, one headline member of the setup at Anfield who could well have his sights instead fixated elsewhere comes in the form of Jurgen Klopp.

Speaking on the back of the Reds’ downing of Cardiff City in the FA Cup on Sunday, boss Klopp was drawn on his plans for the AFCON showpiece.

The German, though, admitted that he was unlikely to pay ‘close’ attention to the action, instead keen to take in loanee stopper Nat Phillips’ Bournemouth debut, in an FA Cup showdown with Boreham Wood.
