Unai Emery to make key transfer decisions if confirmed as Newcastle boss

Unai Emery to build Newcastle in his image

Villarreal boss Unai Emery will have to tackle unfamiliar territory if the Spanish manager is confirmed as the new headmaster at St. James’ Park.

According to CBS Sports‘ James Benge, Emery came ready with a list of transfer targets that he would likely pursue if he takes up the vacancy on Tyneside in the wake of Steve Bruce and the club parting ways.

Immediately, speculation has begun to mount regarding just who Emery would look to bring into the Newcastle first-team via the transfer market as soon as the January window opens.

Links to Aaron Ramsey could certainly cool off rapidly if Emery is confirmed given the situation between the pair when the Spaniard was at Arsenal, though the appointment could well suit Joe Willock to the ground.

But despite those mentioned, familiar faces that have once starred under his command could rock up to St. James’s Park.

Certainly, names like Villarreal midfield stalwart Dani Parejo could surface given his success under Emery and the need for the Magpies to address the spine. But given Emery and his track record for relying on a cadre of players across his appointments since his time at Sevilla, no director of football at the club means that he has full control over where and how the club spend the smallish transfer budget in mid-season despite the value of their consortium ownership.

Spaniard is one of the final two on managerial shortlist

In a rapid advance up the interest ladder, Unai Emery shot ahead of the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Paulo Fonseca to take over at Newcastle.

Alongside former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe, the Spanish manager has made the final cut of a managerial shortlist which featured quite a few prominent names.

It perhaps was not the name that many would have wanted however after Arsenal had parted ways with him previously after a mixed-bag tenure at the Emirates and Villarreal having fallen down the La Liga table at current this season.

Certainly, Emery is not the progressive manager on the pitch that many fans would have been hoping for or a young upstart that could make his name by pushing the club out of the proverbial doldrums.

However, he is unquestionably a steady and experienced hand that does have a wealth of experience netting cup competition silverware while plying his trade at clubs that are traditionally outside the top echelon.

He may not be at Newcastle terribly long, but Emery could certainly get the club on track and in line to push on after his reign comes to an end.
