The Spaniard has played just 28 minutes of Premier League football under Antonio Conte, and while clearly talented, lacks the frame and intensity to really have made his mark on the Premier League just yet.

101 broke the news on Saturday that OGC Nice were keen on a potential loan move for the Spaniard, who joined Tottenham for 25 million pounds and Erik Lamela in the summer.

And it seems that they are not alone in their interest.

Competition has emerged in the form of two Spanish clubs, with both Valencia and Real Sociedad both thought to be keen on bringing the man once dubbed the “little Cruyff” back to Spain.

France or Spain?

With a World Cup coming up in November, and Gil low on playing time in north London, a move may well be in his and Tottenham’s best interests as he looks to cement his spot in Luis Enrique’s thoughts and add to his four senior caps to date.

But, would his development be best suited returning to La Liga, or embarking on a new challenge in the form of Ligue 1? It is hard to see what he has left to prove in Spain, having excelled last campaign. A return to La Liga would be a return to his comfort zone, while a change of scene and six months in France could see him continue to develop his considerable skills.

At the end of the day, however, to have the best chance of retaining his spot in the Spain squad, a return to Spain may be the most beneficial to him.
