Twitter is down for many in Australia, users say TechCrunch

Twitter users in Australia and New Zealand have faced issues accessing the service for more than 12 hours, they say, as the Elon Musk-owned social network continues to struggle with reliability issues in as part of cost reduction measures.

The outage began around 2 p.m. PT on Tuesday, according to tweets from users and DownDetector (Australia and New Zealand), a web monitoring tool that tracks reliability issues.

The issue, which results in tweets not loading for users and very slow service for others, appears to only affect those in Australia and New Zealand.

DownDetector’s global website shows very few complaints. It is not known what caused the outage.

Many users say they can access the service after using a VPN app. Although some users are reporting sporadic improvements to the Twitter service, complaints are still pouring in.

Twitter suffered a global outage last week after Musk said he had rolled out “significant changes to the core server architecture” and that should make Twitter feel “faster”.

Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion in late October. He sought to cut Twitter’s expenses by eliminating thousands of employees, many of whom worked to maintain the service’s infrastructure. Musk also focused on speeding up the Twitter experience for users by removing bloat code from the service.
