On Tuesday afternoon, Twitter confirms why users can’t access Twitter using third-party apps. According to a Tweet from @TwitterDevthe platform now enforces “longstanding API rules” that prompted Twitter to break these third-party apps’ interface with the API.

Third-party apps with access to the Twitter API went offline for the first time last Thursday. The edge spoke to Paul Haddad, co-creator of Tweetbot, who said he still hadn’t heard from Twitter about the exact rules that were allegedly broken.

We still haven’t heard from anyone on Twitter at any level […] If there is a long-standing rule that we have unknowingly broken for over 10 years, we would like to know what it is so that, if possible, we can comply with it. –Paul Haddad

Not all third-party apps are offline, so there’s no clear reason why some apps got offline while others continue to work.

Since taking over Twitter, Elon Musk has spearheaded the drastic changes that have taken place at Twitter headquarters over the past few months. Since then, Twitter has suffered massive layoffs, Twitter Blue has been relaunched twice, and Musk’s own poll has voted for him to step down as CEO of Twitter.
