Tourism sector hopes Ramaphosa lifts ban on international travel

Tourism sector hopes Ramaphosa lifts ban on international travelAs South Africans anticipates move to level 1, the tourism sector is also hopeful that President Cyril Ramaphosa opens the country’s borders to allow international travels.

President Cyril Ramaphosa plans to address the nation today in order to give an update of government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The president told the SA National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) last week that the government was consulting several bodies on the best time to relax the lockdown.

He said the government is considering relaxing some of the lockdown regulations which translates to the fact that SA could move to the next less stricter level.

The tourism sector has been one of those sectors negatively affected by the lockdown.

Even after the government implemented level 2 lockdown, the sector was still not fully balanced because foreigners outside SA were unable to patronize the sector.

This is due to fears that travellers from outside the country could spur on a second wave of infections.

Tourism SA CEO Sisa Ntshona said that they were not expecting an influx once the border regulations were eased.
