Tottenham named as one of clubs to have tabled proposal for Lionel Messi
Word stemming from the South American media suggests that Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur this weekend launched an audacious bid to land Lionel Messi.
Messi moving on
Ronald Koeman’s Barca have of course taken centre stage across the European football landscape over the last 72 hours.
This comes on the back of the bombshell announcement that Lionel Messi, following two decades at the Camp Nou, will be taking his talents elsewhere for the season ahead.
Just hours after it had been widely reported that an agreement between the two parties was close, the Blaugrana released a statement, admitting that they had essentially been left with no choice but to part with the club’s greatest-ever player.
This came as a result of ‘financial and structural obstacles’ laid in the path of the Catalans by none other than La Liga.

Widespread chatter, in turn, has since surrounded where Messi could end up next, with the legendary Argentine now available as a free agent.
The likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United have all inevitably been tipped as potential landing spots, albeit with Ligue 1 heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain understood to be closing on a deal:

As outlined above, though, amid the chaos which immediately followed word of Messi’s Barcelona departure, another of the Premier League’s clubs actually launched an audacious bid of their own.
The outfit in question? Tottenham.
As per a report from ESPN in the veteran’s home country of Argentina, before word of Messi’s PSG switch was forthcoming, Spurs tabled a lucrative offer of their own.
La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, are understood to have done likewise.

Claims of a Tottenham swoop for Messi have made their way to Italy, too, with journalist Tancredi Palmeri having pushed the suggestion that those in a position of power in North London made contact with Jorge, the attacker’s father, last Friday.
