Top 10 best football podcasts to listen to in the 2021/22 season

Given football’s relentless nature these days, podcasts can be the best way to keep up with the non-stop schedule of action.

It is estimated that there are over 2,000,000 in the world and, roughly, it feels like about 1,999,999 of them are about football.

So, we’ve picked out our favourite podcasts which are essential listening during the hectic football season to come.

1) Guardian Football Weekly

Guardian Football Weekly

Despite having started 15 years ago, the Guardian Football Weekly Podcast remains one of the very best in the business.

Host Max Rushden and his sidekick Barry Glendenning are joined by a wide-range of guests to discuss a wide-range of issues.

Aside from this duo, numerous other guests make the podcast the outstanding piece of content it is.

Jonathan Wilson, amongst other things, provides the facts you didn’t know you needed, often about the Hungarian national team from the 1950s.

Other popular regulars include Barney Ronay and his metaphors, Mark Langdon and his meat-based recipes, Flo Lloyd-Hughes, Lars Sivertsen, Jacob Steinberg, John Brewin, Paul MacInnes, Jonathan Liew and many more.

There’s also Archie Rhind-Tutt covering Germany, Nicky Bandini on Italy, Sid Lowe in Spain and Philippe Auclair on France with Philippe’s rants about FIFA and Gianni Infantino sadly often edited out by the lawyers.

Rushden himself has said that the show “ranges from proper analysis…. to commentary about serious issues of it, balanced with some complete nonsense”.

This pretty much sums it up.

2) Totally Football Show

Totally Football Show

Last season there has been a lot of talk about the break-away Super League.

Well, if Florentino Pérez, Andrea Agnelli and the rest wanted advice on how to successfully break-away and create something super, they should have asked the Totally Football Show.

Back in 2017, host James Richardson and others left the aforementioned Football Weekly to form their own podcast which has thrived since.

Richardson is best known for presenting the much loved Football Italia on Channel 4 in the UK, mainly in the 1990s.

Regulars on TFS include Daniel Storey, Michael Cox, Carl Anka, Matt Davies-Adams, former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin and Duncan Alexander providing the stats that are often both weird and wonderful.

Then there is the simply unmatched Euro crew.

James Horncastle (Italy), Raphael Honigstein (Germany) and Julien Laurens (France) along with Richardson used to host the European Football Show on BT Sport.

Thus, they know each other very well and their chemistry comes across during podcast.

This quartet, alongside Spanish football expect Álvaro Romeo, are unrivalled in their coverage of European football which makes it essential listening.

TFS and Guardian Football Weekly have had a Celtic-Rangers style duopoly over the Football Supporters’ Federation Best Sport Podcast award in recent years, highlighting that these two are the best in Britain.

3) Total Soccer Show

Total Soccer Show

This is the only U.S. based podcast on the list, and is not to be confused with the Totally Football Show above.

Many in Europe have the perception that America’s don’t know what they’re talking about when it comes to football.

But the outstanding work of those at the Total Soccer Show makes a mockery of such Europe-centric snobbery.

The podcast has continued to thrive despite the tragic passing of co-host Daryl Grove back in October 2020.

Co-founder Taylor Rockwell, Joe Lowery, Ryan Bailey, Graham Ruthven and others have allowed the podcast to continue to thrive.

The podcast has a good mix with Joe, the official dictator of Porto and President of the James Sands Fan club, finding tactical nuances.

Alongside, there’s Ryan never failing to mention AFC Wimbledon and Graham providing a window into his seemingly endless shirt collection.

So, if you’re looking for a football (soccer) podcast that has struck the perfect balance of analysis and humour, look no further than TSS.

4) 5Live Football Daily

5live Football Daily

5Live Football Daily Podcast offers a wide range of podcasting every day on a wide range of footballing topics.

As it is run by the UK’s nation broadcaster, the BBC, Football Daily covers mainly British football but also competitions from across Europe and the world.

This includes the weekly Euro Leagues podcast.

Another popular show is the Monday Night Club where MOTD2’s Mark Chapman is joined by Micah Richards, Chris Sutton and Rory Smith.

In general, all BBC Sounds podcasters are excellent and Football Daily is no different.

5) ITV Football Football Podcast

ITV Football Football Show

The ITV Football Football Podcast is hosted by Mark Pougatch and Andros Townsend who joined Everton from Crystal Palace in July.

They’ve been joined by stellar guests including Kyle Walker, Michail Antonio, Harry Kane, Sven-Göran Eriksson, Patrick Vieira Gary Neville and Tyrone Mings.

From this season, ITV are back in the right-holding game for English club football.

The FA Community Shield will be broadcast on ITV in August followed by FA Cup matches, starting from round one.

Thus, expect some excellent content across all forms of media from ITV this seasons.

6) Zonal Marking

Zonal Marking

One of many Athletic podcasts on this list, the Zonal Marking Podcast is, if you’re into your tactics, the show for you.

Michael Cox has been writing in depth about tactics for many years, first doing so on a blog named ‘Zonal Marking’.

Alongside Tom Worville, The Athletic’s Football Analytics Writer, and host Ali Maxwell, they address a different tactical topic each week.

So, once again, if tactical nuances, xG and PPDA are what you live for, this podcast is essential listening.

7) Greatest Game Podcast with Jamie Carragher

One of Britain’s best-loved pundits, Jamie Carragher, has made the transition from player to television look easy.

During his playing career, the centre-back played for just one club, Liverpool, making 737 appearances, winning 11 major honours including the Champions League.

After retiring, he joined Sky Sports and has since become their lead pundit, alongside Gary Neville.

Later, in 2019, he launched his own podcast; The Greatest Game.

Thierry Henry was the first guest and 37 stellar guests have followed.

Other ex-footballers to appear include Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen and Ryan Giggs.

Carragher has also got current players Jordan Henderson, Wilfried Zaha and Belgium Head Coach Roberto Martinez.

It’s not just footballers though: Paddy McGuinness, Martin Compston and Tony Bellew and more have appeared discussing their love of the beautiful game.

With more superstar guests to come, don’t miss The Greatest Game with Jamie Carragher.

If you’re looking for something more continental, may we recommend El Tel & Jon’s La Liga Weekly.

The Podcast is hosted by commentator and author Jon Driscoll and former pro-footballer Terry Gibson.

During his playing career, Gibson played for Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Coventry and Wimbledon, winning the FA Cup with the crazy gang in 1988.

Since retiring, he’s become a La Liga expert and analyst.

Jon and Terry first recorded La Liga Weekly on 18 August 2014, as part of Sky Sports’ Spanish football coverage, recording 174 episodes across four seasons.

But, Sky then pulled the podcast when they lost the La Liga rights in the U.K.

Despite this, the pair went independent, launching their own show in January 2019.

They’ve since launched a Patreon page with bonus content available to loyal and paying supporters.

The USP of La Liga Weekly is their comprehensive coverage of all of La Liga.

Of course, Real Madrid, Barça and Atlético dominate conversation but the Cádizs, Alavés and Rayo Vallecanos of this world are not forgotten, unless a game is a bore 0-0 draw.

So, if you like La Liga or want to know more about the Primera División, this podcast is heartily recommended.

9) Totally Football League Show

If your club lies outside the elite of English football, then he Totally Football League Show might be for your.

Twice a week the Totally Football Show’s sister podcast round up the goings-on in the EFL Championship, League 1 and League 2.

Host Matt Davis-Adams brings insight and enthusiasm to the show, although a bit less of the latter if Nottingham Forest have lost at the weekend.

He’s joined by two former EFL players.

Adrian Clarke did make seven appearance for Arsenal but made a fair few more for the likes of Southend, Carlisle and Stevenage.

Sam Parkin makes up the regular trio; he’s most well-known for his time at Swindon Town, scoring 68 times in 128 appearances for the Robins.

Then, in the Totally Football League Show extra time, Ali Maxwell and George Elek from the ‘Not the top 20’ podcast take over.

So, if your club finds itself in the EFL, perhaps you’re a Fulham, Sheffield United West Brom, Sutton or Hartlepool fan, then look no further than this.
