THRASHED: Anett Kontaveit Knocks Out Bianca Andreescu Ahead of Wimbledon Championships 2021

The grass-court season for both the men’s and the women’s singles continue to spin surprises before the start of Wimbledon this year. At the on-going WTA Eastbourne International, young Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu faced an early exit in the second round against Anett Kontaveit, 3-6,2-6.

After making a promising start to the tournament by defeating Christina McHale in the first round, Andreescu looked completely out of place against Kontaveit.

Right from the start, Kontaveit started to build pressure on her return games as Andreescu fumbled on her first-serves. However, the Estonian also couldn’t handle the heat of the moment and lost her service games as well.

The first set between the two was a roller-coaster ride, but the Canadian‘s inability to win free points on both her serves allowed Anett Kontaveit to run away with the set, 6-3.

Even in the second set, it was Kontaveit who got the opportunity to break first as the Canadian’s struggles on serve continued. But, Andreescu ensured that she didn’t lose another service game and kept her hopes alive of staying in the contest.

As expected, a vulnerable service game from the Estonian put Andreescu right back into the match. Serving to level the match at 4-4, the young Canadian made unforced errors from both the wings and gifted the game to Kontaveit.

The momentum suddenly shifted towards the Estonian as she served for the match at 5-3. To handle the slippery nature of the grass, Andreescu implemented both the forehand and backhand slice for a large portion of the match.

But, the technique didn’t work out as Kontaveit sailed through her service game, thanks to the innumerable unforced errors from the Canadian’s racquet. It’s an unfortunate start for the grass-court for Andreescu as this performance will hinder her confidence ahead of Wimbledon Championships.
