Thomas Tuchel outlines plans for Saul’s Chelsea future

Chelsea land Saul on deadline day

It took until deadline day for Chelsea to land their sought after midfield reinforcements, as they announced a loan move for Atletico Madrid outcast Saul Niguez for the 2021/22 season.

The deal at one point seemed close to collapse, with the paperworks only submitted with minutes to go, but in the end Thomas Tuchel got his man, and added the experienced 26 year old to his already star-studded squad.

In fact, Saul is in line for a potential Chelsea debut this weekend, as the Blues face Aston Villa, since N’golo Kante is out with an injury and both Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic were involved in international duty with Italy and Croatia respectively.

Saul, meanwhile, was not called up by Spain, leaving him free to train in west London with his new side.

Tuchel discusses permanent move

Part of the loan move to take Saul from Spain’s capital to England’s was the agreement of an option to make the move permanent at the end of the campaign. As per the reliable Matt Law, this figure stands at around 30 million pounds.

And, speaking ahead of the clash with Villa, Tuchel spoke on the possibility of making the move permanent:

“We have the chance, which is good, and now it’s on us and the player, and we can get to know each other in detail and see if this is a good fit.”

He also revealed that Saul had been tracked by both him and the club for several years, and that he had come close to signing him at other clubs:

“Saul has been on the radar for Chelsea for many years. I’ve known the player for many years and I fought at other clubs for him, but it wasn’t possible.

“So when the situation was that we could have a loan, we were excited about it.”

It remains to be seen if the fit will be as seamless as Tuchel hopes it will be, but if it is, Saul could be a Chelsea player for several years.
