Thomas Tuchel outlines plan for Timo Werner after Romelu Lukaku arrival

    Werner’s rocky Chelsea start

Timo Werner arrived in west London to much fanfare last summer, off the back of scoring 28 goals in 34 Bundesliga games for RB Leipzig.

Better yet, the striker was stolen from under the nose of Premier League rivals Liverpool, who allegedly baulked at the 45 million pound release clause, a figure Chelsea were willing to pay.

However, he did not have the impact desired at Stamford Bridge, netting 12 times in 52 appearances for the Blues. As a result, Thomas Tuchel dipped back into the transfer market, recruiting Romelu Lukaku just 12 months later.

Tuchel outlines plans for the front-man

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s game against Aston Villa this weekend, Tuchel outlined how he planned to use Werner and Lukaku going through the season, hinting at the two of them playing together. The Chelsea boss said:

“I am sure that we will find games and solutions where we play with both of them (Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku)”

“We did already and Timo and Romelu can be a good fit together. Timo loves to play around a reference up front and Romelu is clearly our reference up front being a tall and physical player.”

However, he pointed out the importance of confidence to the German’s game, who has seen some high profile misses in his short time at Stamford Bridge:

“The most important is he finds his rhythm and confidence and joy and makes his point and makes his way into the team.”

“We are very happy that he scored and played (for Germany in the international break) and on we go.

“We have not too many players but we have players with high quality and high ambition and Timo is clearly a guy that we count on and that is absolutely necessary we have him on high level.”

Could Lukaku be the man to bring the best out of Werner?
