Thomas Tuchel opens up about Antonio Rüdiger contract situation; all parties relaxed

Tuchel relaxed amidst Rüdiger contract talks

Chelsea tactician Thomas Tuchel has spoken out regarding the contract situation regarding key center-back and German international Antonio Rüdiger.

As reported by SkySports, Tuchel feels his countryman has little reason to to seek a move away from Chelsea after playing a vital role for the Blues in their run to becoming Champions League winners last season, while also keeping that same status in the team as Chelsea began their 2021-22 Premier League campaign in strong fashion whilst picking up ten points from a possible twelve while sitting joint-first in the table along with Manchester United, Liverpool, and Everton.

Tuchel reflected on the situation;

I think Toni feels very, very good at Chelsea. He feels respect from his team-mates, he feels the importance he has in the team. It’s well deserved because he delivers.

He feels the love from the supporters. He plays in the strongest league in Europe and in a big club, so not many reasons to change. But it’s in good hands. I’m calm and relaxed – whatever has to happen will happen.”

The Chelsea boss also commented on the relaxed nature that Rüdiger was taking the whole situation in stride;

“I hope that they find a solution but it’s not only between coaches and players. It’s between the club and the player’s agent. He plays excellent for a long time – very consistent [and] at a very high level. I feel him very calm, very focused and it’s obviously not a distraction for him”

Long-standing uncertainty around Rüdiger’s future

Questions have been swirling around what comes next for Antonio Rüdiger from earlier in the summer despite the VfB Stuttgart academy product’s importance to Chelsea’s system under Thomas Tuchel.

Rüdiger found new life under Tuchel after Frank Lampard was sacked halfway through last season and has firmly rooted himself as arguably the most critical piece of the Chelsea back line, so a measure of frustration would be understandable.

Few would argue if the club could put him in the shop window in January as getting some semblance of financial restitution for him would certainly be a better piece of business than allowing him to walk on a free.
