Thomas Tuchel hints at Romelu Lukaku deal after pre-season draw

Chelsea need a striker

Chelsea’s search for a striker has been one of the worst kept secrets of the summer. Initially after Erling Haaland, they were rebuffed by Borussia Dortmund, who wanted far more than Chelsea were prepared to offer.

As a result, they have turned their attention to Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku, who has blossomed since an unsuccessful spell at Stamford Bridge between 2011 and 2012. As per Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are set to offer 100 million pounds for the forward, whilst the Athletic report that the Belgian has indicated he wishes to join the London club.

What Tuchel said

Following a 2-2 draw to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Tuchel was drawn on the striker position and the future of Romelu Lukaku. When asked about Lukaku, he replied that:

“Romelu Lukaku is a fantastic player, but he’s not in my squad…”

However, when asked about where he needed to strengthen his squad, the Chelsea boss revealed that:

“With the exit of Olivier Giroud, we could use a player who plays with their back to goal and it means we can add this direct style of play. It’s the sort of profile we don’t have in the squad that can be useful.”

This sums up Lukaku, a man well renowned for his link-up play, and will only send Chelsea fans into further frenzy over a potential deal being concluded very soon.
