Thomas Tuchel gives armband to Marcos Alonso as Cesar Azpilicueta is rested against Villa

Surprise leadership decision by Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel made a surprise selection decision as the Blues are set to kick-off against visiting Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge in just under an hour, with the German tactician selecting Marcos Alonso as his captain for the day. Club captain Cesar Azpilicueta was not given a runout, and his compatriot has benefitted.

Alonso was included in the Chelsea XI that clashes with Dean Smith’s Villa as the Blues look to – at least – climb above Tottenham should they secure all three points after Spurs were thrashed 3-0 by Crystal Palace in the lunchtime kick-off.

Trevoh Chalobah was also selected to face Smith’s outfit after he continued to impress in pre-season and in the opening exchanges of the current Premier League campaign, with Chelsea dipping into their squad depth this weekend in the run-up to Champions League group stay play set to begin in midweek with Tuchel’s men hosting Zenit St. Petersburg

Saúl home debut for Chelsea

Summer acquisition Saúl Ñíguez has been given his full Chelsea debut this afternoon, with the former Atlético Madrid standout primed to kick-start a new chapter in his career on England shores.

The Spanish international – who is selected alongside Mateo Kovačić in a midfield tandem – comes into the team with both N’Golo Kanté and Jorginho was given a day off from the office, surely with Champions League in the back of Tuchel’s mind.

Blues supporters the world over will be curious to see how the new man gets on, with the hope that his addition adds the depth in quality necessary for Chelsea to kick on and challenge for Premier League honors this term.
