Thiago Silva set a remarkable Premier League season benchmark in Chelsea’s draw with Everton

A head-turning statistic surrounding the on-ball efforts of Chelsea defender Thiago Silva during the club’s meeting with Everton has begun turning heads online.

Mount’s strike not enough

Thomas Tuchel, of course, led his side back into action late last night.

After slipping off the Premier League’s summit amid a shaky recent spell of form, the Blues welcomed relegation-threatened Newcastle United to Stamford Bridge, hopeful of closing the gap on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City to just two points.

When all was said and done in west London, however, Chelsea, once again, came up short.

With a whole host of the club’s key performers sidelined owing to a combination of injury and Covid-19, a disjointed display ultimately saw the European champions forced to settle for a share of the spoils, in a 1-1 draw.

Upon Mason Mount breaking the deadlock twenty minutes from time, Chelsea, on top and in control, looked well on their way to all three points:

However, in just the latest example of the increasingly creaky nature of the club’s backline, Everton bagged what proved to be a decisive equaliser less than five minutes later, courtesy of Jarrad Branthwaite:

As alluded to above, though, despite Chelsea, in the end, failing to get the job done on Thursday, one member of the club’s backline did manage to secure for himself an altogether impressive benchmark.

The player in question? Thiago Silva.

As revealed by WhoScored, veteran defender Silva, consistently lauded despite his side’s struggles of late, completed a hefty 142 passes across the 90 minutes versus Everton.

This is the most that any player has managed in the Premier League to this point in the campaign, a full 14 more than now-2nd-placed Jordan Henderson:
