The one major factor holding up Reiss Nelson’s move from Arsenal to Crystal Palace

A fresh insight into the potential departure of Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson this summer has, this weekend, been forthcoming.

Gunners struggles

21-year-old winger Nelson is of course fresh off the back of another trying campaign in North London.

After beginning to remind Gunners supporters of his unquestionable talents over the closing months of the 2019/20 season, it was hoped that Nelson would subsequently kick on last time out, to establish himself as a viable attacking option under Mikel Arteta.

To say that such hopes fell flat, however, would be putting it lightly.

Amid competition from the likes of Nicolas Pepe, Willian and fellow youngsters Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, the Arsenal youth product was restricted to a paltry two Premier League appearances across the entire season.

Such struggles, in turn, have inevitably seen speculation begin to spread in the media that Nelson’s stint in the English capital could be set to come to an end this summer, with consistent game-time of course integral at such a delicate point in a player’s development.

Selhurst switch latest

The club, thus far, to have been most persistently tipped as a potential landing spot for Nelson have actually been one of Arsenal’s London rivals, in the form of Crystal Palace.

The board at Selhurst Park have of course done a fine job of reinforcing new boss Patrick Vieira’s ranks to this point in the summer, with all of Michael Olise, Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi having linked up with the Eagles.

Nelson, meanwhile, appears next up on Vieira’s wish-list, with rumours surrounding a potential loan move across the capital having been mounting for several weeks now.

And, as outlined above, this weekend, a fresh insight into the situation has been forthcoming.

As per a report from The Sun, Arsenal appear very much open to allowing their talented youth product to join Palace for the 2021/22 campaign.

However, one stumbling block remains in place, in the form of Nelson’s contract.

The 21-year-old’s current terms at the Emirates are due to expire in 2023. Before allowing him to move on, Mikel Arteta and co. therefore hope to tie Nelson down to a fresh deal, to ensure that he does not return to North London next summer with just 12 months remaining at the club.

It is added that ‘the Gunners do not want to lose the winger in the long term or sell him now’, with negotiations, in turn, seemingly imminent.
