Meta Platforms’ oversight board said on Tuesday it will review more types of content moderation cases and speed up some decisions as it aims to expand its work.

The oversight board was created in late 2020 to review Facebook and Instagram’s decisions regarding the removal or removal of certain content and make decisions on whether to maintain or reverse the social media company’s actions . The 22-member council said it would now start releasing decisions on some cases on an expedited basis. Decisions could come as quickly as 48 hours after a case is accepted, while others could take up to 30 days.

Standard decisions, in which the oversight committee thoroughly reviews Meta’s content moderation actions, can take up to 90 days.

Posting more decisions and increasing the tempo “will allow us to better address the grand challenges of content moderation and respond more quickly in situations with pressing real-world consequences,” the board said in the post. of blogging.

Unlike standard decisions, expedited cases will be reviewed by a panel of council members instead of the full council and will not consider public comment.

The board will also begin publishing summary decisions to analyze instances in which Meta changed its mind about whether to leave or remove positions. Such cases could help Meta avoid similar mistakes in the future and could be useful to researchers and civil society, the council said.

He also announced on Tuesday that he would add Kenji Yoshino, a professor of constitutional law at New York University School of Law, as a new board member.
