The Last of Us’ Bella Ramsey to Star in Period Drama ‘Monstrous Beauty’

Fresh off his starring role on HBO’s “The Last of Us,” actor Bella Ramsay has found his next big project in period drama “Monstrous Beauty.” Actor Romola Garai, best known for starring in “Atonement” and “The Hour,” wrote the screenplay and will also direct the film, Deadline reported.

Ramsey, who is non-binary and prefers pronouns, will play an aspiring playwright in the court of King Charles II who suffers from a rare condition that means she is completely covered in hair. The story mixes fiction and real historical characters.

The film will also star Dominic West as King Charles II, Ruth Negga as his mistress Nell Gwyn and Fiona Shaw as Aphra Ben, the first ever published female playwright in history. The film, which will begin shooting in September, will be produced by Matthew James Wilkinson for Stigma Films.

Ramsey shot to fame after starring as Lyanna Mormont in HBO’s fantasy series “Game of Thrones.” The actor recently tried out for the role of Ellie in HBO’s series adaptation of popular video game “The Last of Us” alongside Pedro Pascal.

It’s also been confirmed that the hit HBO show will return for a second season, which will be based on the video game sequel, The Last of Us Part II. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann said the game’s events could span more than one season. Ramsey recently appeared on The Jonathan Ross show and confirmed that The Last of Us season two will begin filming “at the end of this year, beginning of the next.” Pedro Pascal, co-head of the show alongside Ramsey, also hinted at the same earlier, saying that production on season 2 could start in 2023.
