The frontrunners for the Barcelona job revealed after Koeman sacked

Ronald Koeman dumped by the wayside

Following a 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano, the Barcelona board finally took the decision to part ways with former boss Ronald Koeman.

A Radamel Falcao strike on the half-hour mark proved decisive, with Memphis Depay missing a penalty to level matters late on in the game.

And just hours after, confirmation of Koeman’s contract termination was forthcoming.

In a statement, the club said:

FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first team coach. The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva.

FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the Club and wishes him all the best in his professional career.

Xavi leads the way, with backup option touted too

In terms of replacement, it is clear that Barcelona have one man in mind should they be able to get him. The man in question? Former Blaugrana club legend Xavi Hernandez.

Currently at Qatar side Al-Sadd, it is thought that Xavi is open to the move, but only signed a new contract with Al-Sadd in the summer, so could have problems making the switch.

Should this prove too difficult, Sergi Barjuan is considered a good interim option, before the club continue to assess the options come next summer.

Who should take the hotseat?
