Superman: Henry Cavill’s return canceled, James Gunn writes a new film

Henry Cavill won’t be returning as Superman after all. James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy director and DC Studios new co-CEO, took to Twitter on Wednesday to confirm that a Superman movie is in the works, but he’s focused on an earlier version and more. youth of the hero. The Suicide Squad filmmaker has been working on the script for a while now and revealed that the character, understandably, won’t be portrayed by Cavill. The 39-year-old actor announced his return to the DC Universe in October, following the exit of Dwayne Johnson, directed by black adamwith reports claiming that Warner Bros. intended to create a sequel to Man of Steel.
Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran recently sat down with the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, to unveil their plans to help “reset” the DC Universe. According to Gunn himself, it also involved a “great meeting” with Cavill, where they discussed a “number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future”. The actor, who recently announced his exit from Netflix’s main series The Witcher, confirmed the news on Instagram, wishing everyone involved luck in their quest to revamp the comic book universe.
Peter and I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be happier with; we will be able to share exciting information about our first projects at the start of the new year.

“After all, I won’t be returning as Superman. After the studio told me to announce my return in October, before they were hired, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that,” the post read. “My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It was a fun ride with all of you, up and up. As previously reported, Cavill was reportedly brought back to direct a Man of Steel sequel, as a hunt for writers began at the WBD offices. He was last seen in the red cape during a post-credits scene of black adam – Johnson made it happen despite protests from the powers that be in DC at the time.
Responding to responses on Twitter, Gunn confirmed that the Superman project won’t be an origin movie, and he has no idea who will be directing it yet. That said, the filmmaker and DC exec spoke about meeting Ben Affleck (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) “precisely because” Affleck wants to do a project, and the studio has similar intentions. Still need to find the right project.
Last week, reports emerged claiming that Patty Jenkins’ latest treatment for the wonder woman film series was no longer moving forward at DC Studios. Some outlets claimed the filmmaker had “walked away” from the project, following a dispute over notes with the studio. In a statement shared on his Twitter, Jenkins proceeded to remove any misinformation regarding the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3. “it reads. “That’s just not true. I never left. I was open to considering whatever was asked of me. I had understood that there was nothing I could do to advance anything at this time. DC is obviously buried in the changes they need to make, so I understand those decisions are tough right now.
Gunn even responded to her statement by saying, “I can attest that all interactions with Peter and my interactions with you were nothing but pleasant and professional.” In a meeting last week, Gunn and Safran, alongside co-chairmen of Warner Bros. Pictures Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, broke the news to Jenkins, informing him that the direction of Wonder Woman 3 “did not match the news (but still plans in progress). This report came just a day after wonder woman and Wonder Woman 1984 frontman Gal Gadot expressed excitement about playing the titular Amazon warrior again, on his own Twitter.
For now, Gunn, Safran, and Zaslav are on a mission to turn the otherwise messy comic book universe into a connected arc, akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, by laying out a 10-year plan that focuses on quality rather than quantity. Gunn has also teased some projects on his social media, which presumably includes a Mr. Terrific project and the first poster for the next blue beetle film slated for release next year.
