Stranger Things 4 failed to top Squid Game’s ratings record on Netflix. While Season 4 was considered the greatest English-language TV series in Netflix history, it still fell short of South Korean survival drama globally. In the first 28 days of its release, the final season (Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 combined) generated 1.352 billion hours of viewing. In contrast, Squid Game totaled 1.650 billion hours during the same period.

Netflix calculates these numbers based on total hours watched in the first month of release – 28 days. According to figures provided by Netflix, in the case of Stranger Things 4, Netflix only considered the number of viewers after the release of Vol. 2. The series was released in a segmented format, with the first volume debuting on May 27, consisting of seven episodes. Volume 2 was released on July 1 – a month and five days later – with two episodes.

Hwang Dong-hyuk’s Squid Game, however, occupies the untouchable first place with 1.650 billion hours watched on the streaming platform. Stranger Things 4 is followed second by Bridgerton 2, as the most watched English series with 656 million hours recorded. One important thing to note here is the execution time. Squid Game lasts about 8 hours, while Stranger Things 4 lasts about 13 hours. Even the extra five hours wasn’t enough to beat the South Korean drama Squid Game, which became a global phenomenon overnight.

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things is a Netflix sci-fi series centered on a group of children in the fictional rural town of Hawkins, Indiana who experience countless supernatural phenomena. The series stars Winona Ryder, David Harbor (Black Widow), Millie Bobby Brown (Enola Holmes), Finn Wolfhard and Joe Keery (Free Guy) in the lead. The directing duo also plans to make a live-action adaptation of Death Note, the popular Japanese manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata.

Stranger Things is set to return for a fifth and final season, with the writing team revealing yesterday that they have begun scripting the ending to the hit Netflix series. In a picture post on their official Twitter account on Tuesday, they captioned it “Day 1”.
