Steven Bergwijn throws Tottenham future into doubt

Tottenham Hotspur attacker Steven Bergwijn has admitted that he may soon be forced to seek out an exit from the club.

Dutch international Bergwijn has of course endured an altogether underwhelming campaign to date.

Sitting behind all of Son Heung-min, Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and January arrival Dejan Kulusevski in the attacking pecking order in north London, he has been afforded starts in just four of Spurs’ 34 Premier League fixtures under the combined watch of Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte.

In possession of unquestionable talent, it has therefore come as little surprise to see the 24-year-old hotly tipped for a Spurs exit for some time now, with Dutch heavyweights Ajax one such club frequently pushed as a potential landing spot in the media.

And, if the latest comments on the part of Bergwijn himself are anything to go by, then it appears that the ex-PSV Eindhoven standout is very much open to a return to his home country.

When drawn on his future on Monday, Bergwijn all but confirmed his intention to seek out a transfer come the summer, in explaining:

“A starting spot here? I don’t think so to be honest. It’s a complicated story for me. I don’t play much. Ajax could be an option for me, a return to The Netherlands could be an option for me. The World Cup is coming.”

Bergwijn’s exit plea of course comes just 24 hours on from the winger being forced to make do with another cameo from the bench, as Tottenham ran out comfortable winners in a Premier League meeting with Leicester City.

Goals on the part of Son Heung-min (2) and Harry Kane proved enough to guide Antonio Conte’s troops to a 3-1 triumph in north London.

Arsenal’s ensuing victory over West Ham, though, means that Spurs remain in 5th in the English top-flight table, with just four games to play.
