Sterling pays touching tribute with celebration, before Declan Rice goes viral for showing up classless Hungary fans

The scenes stemming from the opening goal netted during England’s meeting with Hungary this evening have since gone viral for all the right reasons.

Kane amongst scorers

Gareth Southgate’s men were of course back in action a short time ago.

In the nation’s first taste of competitive action since suffering heartbreak at the last at the European Championships, the Three Lions made the trip to the Puskas Arena, for a meeting with Hungary.

With Marco Rossi’s outfit having proven no pushovers at the Euros themselves, a tricky evening’s work was widely predicted for England in Budapest.

When all was said and done, however, the class of the visitors simply proved too much.

On the back of a frustrating opening 45 minutes, the game finally exploded into life shortly before the hour-mark, when a scintillating burst down the left culminated in Mason Mount’s pull-back being slotted home by Raheem Sterling:

And, from here, the floodgates opened.

Harry Kane was next on target, before Harry Maguire made sure of all three points for Southgate and co. with a headed finish of his own five minutes later:

And there was even time for Declan Rice to add some gloss to the scoreline, capping off a fine individual display with England’s 4th just minutes from full-time.

A fine night all-round for the Three Lions, who march on to a perfect 12 points from 12 to open their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Rice’s viral moment

As outlined above, however, it is not the impressive nature of England’s eventual victory in the Hungarian capital which has since taken the headlines on the back of the clash.

Instead, this has come in the form of the scenes directly following Sterling’s opener on Thursday night.

After carrying his fine goalscoring form on the international stage into the latest round of fixtures, Sterling took off towards the corner flag, before unveiling a t-shirt underneath his jersey.

The t-shirt featured a personal message, reading:

‘Love you forever Steffie Gregg’

Gregg, understood to have been a close friend of Sterling’s, sadly passed away at the age of just 26 this week, due to Covid-19.

Sterling’s efforts to pay tribute to Gregg, though, were so nearly spoiled by a section of home supporters in attendance at the clash.

After boos rang around the Puskas Arena as England’s stars took the knee ahead of kick-off this evening, the Hungary faithful again showcased a complete lack of class, in hurling full cups of beer down at the Three Lions’ wide-man.

Teammate Declan Rice, though, had the last laugh.

Backing up Sterling and the rest of Gareth Southgate’s men, who by this point had joined in the celebrations, Rice was spotted mocking the home supporters, picking up one of the drinks thrown, before taking a large gulp:
