Jason Schwartzman will voice new villain The Spot on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, it has been revealed.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson have lifted the lid on the film’s big bad.

The film’s villain, which was unveiled at a presentation in Annecy that saw 15 minutes of work-in-progress footage screened in front of an audience for the first time, will be an enigmatic antagonist known as The Spot.

“For those who aren’t hardcore canon fans, The Spot is one of the deepest cuts to Spider-Man’s rogues gallery. But he has one superpower that really got our whole team excited: his body. whole thing is covered in little interdimensional portals that can send him where he wants to go,” co-director Kemp said.

Voiced by Schwartzman, the villain will use these portals as weapons against returning webslingers Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), while bringing in new heroes from across the Spider-Verse like Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac ) and Jessica Drew (Issa Rae) in the fray.

As the filmmakers explained, the villain will feature a character design meant to be reminiscent of an unfinished sketch, with blue construction lines reminiscent of a comic book artist’s rough sketch before work transitions to a inker.

The design itself will evolve over the course of the film as the character changes and grows, taking on a scarier form as he learns to better apply his own powers.

“We thought it would be really cool if the portals looked like living ink spilled or splattered on the comic artist’s drawing. His very simple power provided endless exciting challenges and permutations to our team,” Kemp told the delighted and enthusiastic crowd before the screening. test animation sequences.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will be released on June 2, 2023 in cinemas worldwide.
