Sony releases premium Bluetooth headphones and earphones approximately every two years, and now it’s almost time for the WF-1000XM5 true wireless headphones to replace the WF-1000XM4 from 2021. The new headphones have been certified by the FCC recently, and the images thus revealed that they are more compact than their predecessors – news that will no doubt be met with sighs of relief left and right, since size was one of the main problems with the M4.

Inside the case, you can see that Sony has switched to two pins instead of three for charging the buds, while the case material appears to be matte plastic like the M4 case. Although it is very difficult to determine the size of the case from these images without context, it seems that it could be smaller than that of the M4.

The case is rated for 5V 230mAh, which is higher than the 5V 140mAh rating achieved by the M4’s case, and we hope that translates to faster charging. The LED has moved from the inside of the case to the front. Wireless charging is of course present.

The WF-1000XM5s are made in China, as are Sony’s LinkBuds S. They could become official very soon, now that certifications are underway and leaks are starting to appear.
