Sony sold 7.1 million PS 5 consoles in the last quarter of 2022, the mobile division is not doing so well

Sony has finally solved the PlayStation 5 supply issues and the proof is in the pudding – or rather its financial report for the last three months of 2022. The company has sold 7.1 million PS5 consoles, a massive increase compared to the 3.9 million it managed a previous year.

This pushed gaming and network services revenue to 1.246 trillion yen, up from 813 trillion yen for the same period in 2021, a massive increase of 53%. What’s even more telling is that the bulk of sales came from hardware rather than digital content like last year’s quarter (game sales are also up).

In total, Sony has sold 32.1 million PlayStation 5s since launch (compared to 25 million total in November). Its goal is to reach 37 million by the end of its fiscal quarter (which ends in March, not December). The number of PlayStation Plus subscribers decreased, but the number of monthly active users increased slightly.

Here’s a look at game sales, focusing on past and present top performers. God of War Ragnarok for the PS5 has sold 11 million copies. Note: Look at the number in parentheses to the right, i.e. the number of days since release when the particular sales milestone was reached.

Of course, Sony has other divisions, music for example. Harry Styles, Beyonce, and SZA topped the charts in the final quarter of 2022. Sony also makes movies, although revenue and earnings were down this quarter.

Image sensor sales have increased and Sony has increased production capacity compared to the same period in 2021. The company expects lower unit sales for the next quarter, which will be “partially offset by an improved product mix product”, i.e. the sale of more expensive sensors. on average.

There was something else too, what was it? Okay, phones! Unfortunately, this is not good news – in the last three months of 2022, the Mobile Communications division took in 93 billion yen, compared to 102 billion yen for the same period in 2021.
