Solskjær gives direction on future of Newcastle-linked Lingard

Solskjær wants Lingard extended at Old Trafford

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær has come out and spoken about the future surrounding forward Jesse Lingard at Old Trafford.

The Norwegian headmaster has revealed that his preference for the England international is that he extends his contract with the Red Devils and has labeled him an important player in the process.

“We want to extend Jesse Lingard contract, we see him as an important player for us. It’s up to him, maybe up to me to give him more playing time because he deserves to. Hopefully, we can get a deal sorted for Jesse because we really rate him”  Note: quote provided by Fabrizio Romano via UTDReport

Labeling Lingard an important player at United is a strange one however, as the Warrington-native has logged just 45-minutes of Premier League action this season.

Despite his distinct lack of minutes, Lingard has still found the back of the net on two occasions this term, scoring against Newcastle and West Ham in back-to-back weekends.

In stark contrast, Lingard was absolutely brilliant for David Moyes’ West Ham in the second-half of the 2020-21 Premier League season, posting the best numbers of his career while at the London Stadium.

Across 16-appearances in the league, the United youth product bagged 9-goals and added another 5-assists, with a goal contributions of 0.875/match.

Lingard seamlessly fit into the tactical framework under Moyes, and his appearances for England have also been solid overall. Why Solskjær refuses to trust him more is anyones guess, but there will certainly be life after Old Trafford should he decide to fully part ways with the club.
