Sol Campbell provides take on Arsenal’s signing of Takehiro Tomiyasu

Former Arsenal star Sol Campbell has this weekend provided his take on the club’s deadline day swoop for Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Gunners hard at work

Japanese international Tomiyasu of course marked the final incoming at the end of a busy summer on the red half of North London.

Amid a long overdue effort to rejuvenate the playing squad at the Emirates, Edu and co. oversaw a host of moves both on the incoming and outgoing fronts.

In terms of the latter, the likes of Joe Willock, Hector Bellerin and David Luiz were all moved on, either on a loan or permanent basis.

Through the door in the English capital, meanwhile, came no fewer than six players.

Ahead of the window slamming shut this week, all of Martin Odegaard, Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, Nuno Tavares and Sambi Lokonga were brought in to rejuvenate the ranks of Mikel Arteta.

Then, on deadline day this past Tuesday, much needed additions were forthcoming at right-back, too.

After the aforementioned Bellerin was granted a move to Real Betis, the Gunners swooped decisively, to lure Takehiro Tomiyasu to the Emirates from Serie A outfit Bologna:

‘What we’re looking at’

Tomiyasu, a versatile 22-year-old defender with experience both in one of Europe’s top divisions and on the international stage, of course represents something of an unknown quantity to the majority of the Arsenal fanbase.

As outlined above, though, one former Gunner is evidently of the opinion that, in the long-term, the Japanese will prove to be a solid addition.

Speaking on talkSPORT this weekend, Sol Campbell was drawn on the summer business of his ex-club, and began:

‘Arsenal have been incredibly busy. It’s nice… they’re trying!’

Focusing in on the addition of Tomiyasu specifically, meanwhile, the 46-year-old appeared pleased with the move, explaining:

‘Takehiro Tomiyasu, from Bologna. He’s a defender, good, 22, looks strong – another potential player. That’s what we’re looking at at the moment.’
