Smith Rowe reveals growth due to training with club captain Aubameyang

Smith Rowe continues to impress for club and country

Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe is enjoying a fine start to the 2021-22 season, not only for for Mikel Arteta’s Gunners but also Lee Carsley’s England U21 outfit.

The Hale End graduate netted the lone goal for the Young Lions in a narrow 1-0 win for the U21’s against Andorra yesterday and sparing Carsley’s blushes as England sit third in their U21 European Championship qualifying group behind the Czech Republic and Albania.

It was not the first time the English youngster has put in key displays for club and country this season. Smith Rowe has done incredibly well to cement himself as first-choice in an attacking quarter under Arteta, starting in six of the club’s seven league fixtures (he came on as a sub against Norwich) while making an additional appearance off the bench against AFC Wimbledon in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Smith Rowe continues to improve his displays under his Spanish headmaster at the Emirates after becoming a key figure in Arsenal’s brilliant run of form in the second-half of last season that saw them charge up the table.

The academy pair are now both clear and undisputed long-term pieces in the clubs plan to move forward, but the extra work on the training pitch at London Colney alongside captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as well as influential figure Alexandre Lacazeete is beginning to pay off.

According to the Evening Standard, both senior striker figures have been examples to follow for the young duo after Arteta had called upon both to increase their goal figures this season.

“[Arteta] has spoken to us and given us so much confidence to stay calm. We know we’re going to be getting into these positions. Because we’re both young players we’ve got to stay as calm as possible and just focus on the goal really.

We’ve been practicing a lot in training, after training and we get the support from the experienced players in the team as well, they’re always helping us. It’s really good at Arsenal, we’re really happy with the help we’re getting.

England U21 boss Lee Carsley echoed the importance of goals for Smith Rowe given the position he plays, but was pleased with the youngsters goal against Andorra;

“I’ve seen him in training, the way he finds the corners and finishes very calmly, he finishes like a centre forward at times and the opposite to that is that he has got that last pass which is really important. That’s why I’m keen on getting him in really attacking positions more often, the higher up we can get him and the more we can get him one-vs-one he’ll create a lot of problems like he does at Arsenal.”

Smith Rowe sits on two goals in eight total appearances for the club thus far in 2021-22, already one half of his total return last season across a combined 33-appearances. If extrapolated out across the same amount of outings, ESR could at least double his total from last season.
