Who will win the Ballon d’Or?

The 2021 Ballon d’Or ceremony is set to take place later today.

The award ceremony, hosted at a gala Chatelet Theatre in Paris, is expected to get underway at around 7:30 pm GMT time.

But who, though, should be walking away with the award this year?

Though on paper the award is supposed to be largely based around individual displays, the winner is often decided based on how well their club and country do in any given year.

So, with this in mind, Jorginho, who won the Champions League with Chelsea and Euro 2020 with Italy, is probably a contender to pick up the award.

Elsewhere, N’Golo Kante, though France did not do great at the Euros, could be in with a shot after Chelsea’s CL triumph.

Then, of course, the usual suspects such as Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo are likely to be in the running for the award.

And though Messi did not do great with FC Barcelona this year, he did guide Argentina to the Copa America – finishing the tournament with both the most goals scored and most assists.

Now, ahead of the award being announced, Sergio Ramos has backed Messi to win the prize.

The pair were fierce rivals in Spain for many years, but are now teammates at PSG, which has seemingly led to Ramos backing the Argentine on Monday:

“Yes, of course [I hope he wins. I’m going to defend the guys in my team. I wish him all the luck in the world.

“He’s in good shape, and I think he’s the kind of player who really makes a difference. He’s a unique player and it’s a privilege to have him in the team. I think that bit by bit, each of us is going to bring our own quality to make Paris Saint-Germain even greater and achieve the things we want to achieve.”
