Sergi Roberto’s future confirmed at Barcelona in wake of Xavi’s return

Roberto to continue at Barcelona

Barcelona youth product Sergi Roberto can breathe a sigh of relief in the wake of new boss Xavi returning to the club.

According to Matteo Moretto, Xavi has given the okay to offer a contract renewal to Roberto at Barça despite his desire to add quality to the first team and the central midfield depth already at his disposal at the Camp Nou.

Roberto, whose contract is up at the end of the current season, has only featured in the starting XI four times for the Blaugrana in La Liga this season and is currently dealing with a muscle injury that has kept him out for the clubs last two fixtures.

The Spanish international and La Masia graduate is one of eight central options on the books at Barcelona at current, and despite him fighting for minutes with upcoming starlets Pedri and Gavi, it seems his future at the club is secure under Xavi for the time being.

Is Midfield reinforcement incoming?

A contract extension for Sergi Roberto for sure will sit well with the 29-year-old La Masia product, but recent rumors linking Barcelona boss Xavi with interest in a former clubmate of his may throw his future at the club in doubt regardless.

The Barça boss has apparently trained his sights on former Barcelona midfielder and fellow La Masia product Thiago Alcântara as a surprise target for January.

Thiago is no longer viewed as a guaranteed first-choice option at Liverpool under headmaster Jürgen Klopp this season, and is apparently open to a return to the Catalan giants due to that fact, joining another former teammate in Dani Alves in veterans returning to the Camp Nou to try to aid in Xavi’s task of getting the club back on track in short order.
