Sepura Home raises $3.7 million to turn your kitchen sink into a compost bin

Introducing a nifty new kitchen tech. Victoria, BC-based company Sepura recently launched its eponymous appliance, which sits under a sink instead of a garbage disposal. There is a Bluetooth button included, which can be stuck anywhere near the sink. The system itself sits under the sink and is designed to hook directly into the drain.

When enough food has collected under the drain, press the button, and it will initiate a process that effectively pushes waste through the device. In an introductory video, co-founder and CEO Victor Nicolov is quick to note that the system doesn’t actually grind food waste, unlike a traditional trash can. “We found it best to keep things (untouched). We’ve found it’s better for our planet to avoid squishing stuff in our sewers.

The system also has a guard to prevent water from entering the receptacle, allowing it to flow out of the hose first. It will also stop if it detects something like a utensil you don’t want in the compost bucket.

Today, the company announced the closing of a $3.7 million funding round to accelerate production and delivery of its product, which will cost $700 when it begins shipping in July. The round was rightly led by sink manufacturer Blanco.

“Sepura represents a significant step forward in sustainable living. With its advanced technology and user-friendly design, Sepura offers a simple and effective way to minimize waste and promote a cleaner, healthier environment,” Nicolov said in a statement. “We are excited to bring consumers the sustainable solution they are looking for and to work to improve the impact of food waste on the environment in the future.”

The company claims that its system can “effectively separate 99.9% of solid waste that flows into sewers”.
